Delhi Police Summons MP Bimol Akoijam in Sexual Harassment Case

Delhi Police have issued a notice to Congress MP and former JNU professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam to join an investigation into sexual harassment allegations. This follows his dismissal from Jawaharlal Nehru University on October 9, 2026, after an internal inquiry into student complaints. Akoijam has publicly denied the allegations, disputing the procedural fairness of the university's investigation.

The Delhi Police have issued a formal notice to Congress Member of Parliament and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, requiring his participation in a criminal investigation into sexual harassment allegations. The directive, issued under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, mandates that the lawmaker report to the Vasant Kunj North police station to provide his statement.

This legal escalation follows the termination of Akoijam’s employment at JNU on October 9, 2026. The university had conducted an internal inquiry triggered by complaints from 11 female students filed in May 2026. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) investigation concluded that the professor had engaged in misconduct, which the university administration cited as the primary reason for his dismissal from his position at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems.

On October 11, 2026, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on the formal complaints. The charges invoke sections 75 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relate to sexual harassment and acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

Akoijam has maintained a stance of innocence throughout the process. In public statements, he has rejected the findings of the internal inquiry, characterizing the university’s actions as a "witch hunt" and challenging the procedural integrity of the committee's work. He argues that he was not provided with sufficient opportunity to defend himself during the institutional proceedings.

The current status of the matter remains an ongoing criminal investigation. As the case transitions from the internal disciplinary domain of the university to the jurisdiction of law enforcement, the primary monitorable for the public and stakeholders will be the progress of the police inquiry and the subsequent legal filings. The resolution of this matter will depend on the police investigation's findings and any potential judicial proceedings that may follow.
