Bombay HC Warns Vijay Mallya Over Social Media Leak, Seeks Data

The Bombay High Court has reprimanded Vijay Mallya for sharing an Enforcement Directorate affidavit on social media. The court, currently reviewing his claims about settled bank dues, has directed the State Bank of India-led consortium to submit an updated report on recovered funds by the next hearing on October 13.

The Bombay High Court has issued a stern warning to Vijay Mallya regarding his use of social media to publicize legal documents related to his ongoing cases. Justice Milind Jadhav criticized the decision to share an Enforcement Directorate affidavit on the platform X, noting that such public actions could complicate his legal position and affect the decorum of court proceedings. The court emphasized that legal arguments should be confined to the courtroom rather than being used for public commentary.

The core of the dispute involves conflicting claims regarding bank recoveries. Mallya argues that the asset recoveries managed by a consortium of banks have settled his financial liabilities, rendering further legal action unnecessary. However, the Enforcement Directorate maintains that his status and his absence from Indian criminal courts remain distinct and unresolved issues, independent of the civil recovery process.

The Enforcement Directorate informed the court that the State Bank of India-led consortium has successfully recovered approximately ₹14,131 crore through the Debt Recovery Tribunal. Given the complexity of the competing claims, the court has directed the consortium of banks to file a fresh affidavit. This document is expected to clarify the exact recovery figures and provide updated information to the bench.

The legal matter is scheduled for further review on October 13. On that date, the court is expected to examine the new disclosures alongside Mallya’s amended plea. The outcome of these proceedings will be a key monitorable for stakeholders tracking the status of bad loans and recovery processes linked to the former businessman.
