SS Retail IPO Opens Today: ₹500 Crore Issue at ₹403-₹424 Price Band

SS Retail's IPO opened for subscription on September 16 and closes on September 18. The company is raising ₹500 crore to expand its mobile retail network. While the firm shows strong revenue growth, investors are evaluating its premium valuation of 46.5x earnings against concerns regarding high geographic concentration in Maharashtra and thin profit margins.

SS Retail Limited opened its initial public offering (IPO) for investor subscription on September 16, 2026. The company is looking to raise approximately ₹500 crore, which includes a fresh issue of ₹360 crore and an offer for sale worth ₹140 crore. Potential investors can apply for the issue in a price band of ₹403 to ₹424 per share until September 18, 2026.

The company operates as a mobile retailer and has grown its footprint significantly, reaching 536 stores by July 2026. Its business model focuses on being asset-light, which means it prefers franchise-operated stores over company-owned ones. This approach allows the firm to expand rapidly into Tier II and Tier III cities without spending large amounts of capital on every new location. The company also benefits from high financing-led sales, which make up the bulk of its revenue, helping customers buy expensive smartphones more easily.

While the company has seen strong growth in its top line, the valuation and profitability are key areas for investors to assess. The IPO is priced at 46.5x FY26 earnings. When compared to other listed players in the electronics retail space, such as Electronics Mart and Aditya Vision, this valuation is on the higher side. Furthermore, the company’s operating EBITDA margin stands at 5.3 percent. This margin level is generally lower than some of its industry peers, which suggests that the company operates on thin profitability, relying on high volume and scale to generate returns.

Investors are also looking at the concentration of the business. As of the latest updates, nearly 90 percent of the company’s revenue comes from stores located in Maharashtra. This creates a geographic concentration risk. If the local market conditions in Maharashtra change or if competition increases in that specific region, the company’s revenue could be impacted. Additionally, while the company is expanding, it has seen rising store closure rates, which climbed to 5.4 percent in FY26. Managing these closures while attempting to expand into new states like Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat will be a challenge for the management.

Market sentiment has been active, with grey market premiums suggesting a potential listing gain. However, a premium GMP should not be the sole basis for an investment decision. The company's ability to maintain its 11.2 percent same-store sales growth while expanding into new, less familiar territories will be a critical monitorable for shareholders. The success of this expansion, alongside the ability to improve operating margins, will likely determine the company's long-term performance after the listing, which is tentatively scheduled for September 23, 2026.
