NSE IPO Opens Sept 17 at ₹1,700-1,785 Price Band

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) is set to launch its IPO from September 17 to September 21, 2026. The issue is priced at ₹1,700–₹1,785 per share and will list exclusively on the BSE. As the offering is a complete Offer for Sale, no new funds will go into the company.

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has announced its long-awaited Initial Public Offering (IPO), with the subscription window opening on September 17, 2026, and closing on September 21, 2026. The price band for the issue has been set at ₹1,700 to ₹1,785 per equity share. Retail investors can apply for a minimum lot size of 8 shares, requiring an investment of ₹14,280 at the upper price band.

The Structure of the Offering

The entire IPO is structured as an Offer for Sale (OFS), meaning that up to 12.64 crore shares will be sold by existing shareholders. Because it is an OFS, the company itself will not receive any new capital from this issue; the proceeds from the share sale will go directly to the selling shareholders. This is a common feature in IPOs of well-established, cash-generating companies that do not require immediate funds for operations or expansion.

Exclusive Listing on BSE

In a unique move required by regulatory norms, the NSE shares will be listed exclusively on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). This is due to a SEBI mandate aimed at avoiding conflicts of interest; since the NSE is a market regulator and infrastructure provider, it cannot list its own shares on its own trading platform. This creates a regulatory precedent similar to when the BSE listed itself on the NSE in 2017.

Business Context and Risks

The NSE’s financial health is closely linked to transaction volumes in the Indian equity and derivatives markets. A significant portion of its revenue is generated from transaction charges, particularly in the derivatives segment (futures and options). Investors should note that the company’s revenue is heavily concentrated in these areas. Consequently, any shifts in trading patterns, market volatility, or regulatory interventions aimed at cooling down speculation in the derivatives market could impact the exchange's future earnings.

Furthermore, the exchange has historically faced scrutiny regarding its past operational practices, including inquiries into co-location services. While these matters have been subject to ongoing regulatory attention, potential investors often factor in the exchange's ability to maintain a robust compliance framework and handle governance matters as part of their assessment.

Competitive and Sector Outlook

The NSE operates in a sector with high barriers to entry, often described as an oligopoly alongside the BSE. When assessing the valuation, market participants typically compare the NSE with its listed peer, the BSE. While both entities function as exchanges, their business scale, product mix, and revenue sources differ. Investors are likely to track how the market values the NSE's market leadership against its regulatory responsibilities and its dependence on the high-volume derivatives trade.

The tentative date for the listing of shares on the stock exchange is September 24, 2026. Investors may monitor the subscription numbers across different investor categories, such as institutional and retail, to gauge market sentiment leading up to the listing.
