Jio Platforms IPO Anchor Book Sees 30x Demand, Nets Rs 2.5 Lakh Cr

Jio Platforms’ anchor round attracted bids worth Rs 2.5 lakh crore against an allocation of Rs 8,110 crore, reflecting massive institutional appetite. Global and domestic funds participated heavily, signaling confidence in the company’s digital growth, though investors often weigh such strong initial interest against the company's long-term infrastructure and competition risks.

The anchor book for the Jio Platforms public offering has closed with record-breaking demand, drawing bids worth nearly Rs 2.5 lakh crore for an allocation of Rs 8,110 crore. This means the anchor portion was oversubscribed 30 times, setting a strong tone ahead of the main IPO opening for retail and other institutional investors.

Global and domestic institutions showed clear interest in the Reliance Industries subsidiary. The list of investors includes major international names like BlackRock, Capital Group, Fidelity Investments, and T. Rowe Price. Sovereign wealth funds such as Singapore’s GIC, Norges Bank Investment Management, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and the Qatar Investment Authority also secured allocations. On the domestic side, major mutual funds like SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, and ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, along with insurance giants like the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and SBI Life, participated in the round.

This high level of interest underscores a broader belief among investors that the company is moving effectively from a pure telecom operator to a comprehensive digital ecosystem. By offering integrated services like data, cloud, entertainment, and digital infrastructure, the company aims to capture a larger share of the Indian digital economy.

However, investors may want to keep a balanced view. While a strong anchor book indicates institutional confidence, it is only one part of the IPO process. The company operates in a sector that requires continuous and massive capital spending to keep up with network expansion and 5G/6G technology rollouts. Any delay in these projects or a slowdown in the monetization of digital services could create pressure on cash flows. Furthermore, the company faces stiff competition from established telecom players like Bharti Airtel, who continue to challenge market share through aggressive pricing and service offerings. Regulatory scrutiny regarding digital services and data privacy also remains a factor that could influence operations.

The next steps for investors will be the main IPO subscription, where retail and non-institutional participation will be tested. Market participants will also watch the post-listing performance and the company’s ability to manage its high capital expenditure requirements while growing its average revenue per user. Ensuring that the digital business models—beyond basic connectivity—generate sustainable profits will be a key metric for long-term investors to monitor.
