Hero Motors has finalized the allotment for its ₹1,000 crore IPO following a 6.66x subscription. While retail and non-institutional demand was strong, the muted institutional interest and a negative grey market premium suggest cautious sentiment ahead of the September 23 market debut.
Hero Motors is set to finalise the allotment of shares for its ₹1,000 crore initial public offering on September 21. The public issue saw a subscription of 6.66 times, with bids totalling 58.97 crore shares against the 8.86 crore shares offered. The company, which set a price band of ₹79 to ₹84 per share, is now moving toward its stock market debut on the National Stock Exchange and BSE, scheduled for September 23.
The demand structure reveals a disparity between investor classes. Retail investors and non-institutional investors (NII) showed significant interest, with their reserved portions subscribed 8.23 times and 9.86 times, respectively. However, participation from Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB) was more subdued, with their segment booked 1.49 times. This imbalance is notable for investors, as institutional interest is often considered a significant indicator for long-term sentiment in a newly listed stock.
The grey market premium for the issue has turned negative, falling to minus ₹2 ahead of the listing. This suggests that unofficial market sentiment is currently cautious, indicating the possibility of the stock listing below its upper price band of ₹84. While grey market premiums are unofficial and can change rapidly based on listing-day supply and demand, the current trend points to a cautious environment for new shareholders.
The company raised ₹300 crore through an anchor investor round prior to the public issue, with participation from entities including Societe Generale, ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company, and Edelweiss Life Insurance. The ₹1,000 crore IPO itself consists of a fresh issue of shares worth ₹600 crore and an offer-for-sale by existing shareholders valued at ₹400 crore.
Regarding capital allocation, the company intends to utilise ₹190 crore of the fresh issue proceeds for the repayment or prepayment of debt, while ₹200 crore is earmarked for purchasing equipment for capacity expansion at its Gautam Buddha Nagar plant in Uttar Pradesh. The remainder is allocated for strategic initiatives and general corporate purposes.
Investors who have participated in the IPO should verify their allotment status through KFin Technologies, the registrar for the issue. The next major event will be the listing day, where the stock's performance will be determined by real-time market demand. Observing the initial trading volume and whether institutional investors maintain or increase their interest post-listing will provide clearer insight into how the market values the company relative to its peers.
