A fundraiser has collected over ₹2 crore for Syed Sohailuddin, a Hyderabad native critically injured in a religiously motivated stabbing in Utah, USA. The funds aim to cover his urgent medical expenses as he undergoes multiple surgeries following the July 13 attack.
Syed Sohailuddin, an Indian national from Hyderabad, is currently in critical condition following a violent stabbing incident at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah. The attack took place on July 13, and local law enforcement has identified the suspect as 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen.
Investigation into the Attack
According to reports from investigators, the incident is being treated as a targeted assault. The suspect allegedly approached Sohailuddin and questioned him about his religion before attacking him with a weapon. Bystanders at the scene intervened to restrain the suspect until police arrived. Sohailuddin, who is the sole provider for his wife and two children, suffered severe stab wounds and has required multiple surgeries since being admitted to a local hospital.
Community Support and Medical Expenses
Given that Sohailuddin does not have health insurance, his friend Luna Nunez launched an online fundraiser to help manage the significant financial burden of his medical care. The campaign has successfully raised more than $235,000, which is approximately ₹2 crore. These funds are intended to support his ongoing treatment and provide financial stability for his family during this period of crisis.
Official Support from Indian Consulate
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco has formally acknowledged the incident and is actively engaged in providing consular support. Officials from the Consulate are maintaining regular contact with the victim’s family and friends while coordinating with local authorities in Utah to ensure the investigation proceeds. The Consulate has confirmed that it is monitoring the situation closely, particularly regarding the motivation behind the attack as established by the ongoing investigation.
