Jemima Goldsmith Seeks UK Intervention on Imran Khan Detention

Jemima Goldsmith has publicly urged the UK government to address the jail conditions of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, citing concerns over his health and alleged isolation. This appeal follows a recent controversy regarding Khan's transfer to a government hospital instead of the court-ordered facility, adding to regional political instability.

Jemima Goldsmith, the former wife of Imran Khan, has appealed to the British government to break its silence regarding the former Pakistan Prime Minister's detention. She described the conditions at Adiala Jail, where Khan has been held since August 2023, as a human-rights emergency, stating that his health is deteriorating due to the nature of his confinement.

The appeal follows a recent dispute over medical treatment. On August 21, 2026, Pakistani authorities moved Khan to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for a medical evaluation. This action drew immediate criticism because the Supreme Court of Pakistan had previously ordered that he be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for comprehensive care. After PIMS officials declared Khan medically fit, he was returned to jail, bypassing the court-ordered facility.

In response, Khan’s legal team and his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have filed a contempt petition against government officials. They allege that the failure to comply with the Supreme Court’s transfer order is part of a deliberate attempt to deny Khan proper medical attention. Goldsmith has further alleged that the situation amounts to brutal penalisation, pointing to his long-term solitary confinement and restricted access to family and legal counsel as violations of international standards.

For investors and market participants, the ongoing situation in Pakistan remains a monitorable factor regarding regional stability in South Asia. Prolonged political tension often creates uncertainty in neighboring markets and can influence regional investment sentiment. The persistent legal and political stand-off between Khan’s party and the current government has frequently led to periods of public unrest, which investors generally track for potential impacts on regional security and trade stability.

The situation remains fluid. The primary monitorable for observers will be the outcome of the pending contempt petition in court and any further international or diplomatic reactions regarding Khan’s medical access and detention conditions.
