Economic Synergy and Trade Expansion
The new special strategic partnership between India and Italy is set to drive bilateral trade beyond $20 billion by 2029. This ambitious goal relies on closer cooperation in defense, aerospace, clean technologies, machinery, automotive parts, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and agri-food. The initiative combines Italy's strong manufacturing base with India's growing "Make in India" program, aiming for deep supply chain integration. Over 1,000 businesses already operate between the two countries, showing a solid base for cross-border industrial activity.
Technological Innovation and Digital Growth
A major part of this enhanced alliance is a strong focus on technological innovation. Key areas include artificial intelligence, quantum computing, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals, and digital infrastructure. India's innovative environment and skilled workforce are seen as key partners to Italy's advanced industrial capabilities. Discussions are also happening to ensure AI development is responsible and human-centered, with an emphasis on benefiting the Global South through accessible digital public infrastructure and technologies.
Space, Security, and Energy Cooperation
The partnership also covers space, combining India's progress in space exploration and satellite technology with Italy's aerospace engineering expertise for developing next-generation technology. Both nations are also improving defense and security cooperation to fight threats like terrorism, cyber-crimes, and illegal trafficking. In energy, collaboration will focus on renewables, hydrogen technologies, and smart grids, linking India's green hydrogen goals with Italy's role as an energy gateway to Europe. Participation in initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance is also a key part of the plan.
Bridging the Indo-Mediterranean Economic Corridor
A main strategic goal is to advance an "Indo-Mediterranean" corridor. This aims to connect the Indian Ocean to Europe through better transport, digital networks, and strong supply chains. The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is seen as a way to achieve this connectivity, with both India and Italy showing strong commitment to its development. This initiative signals a larger effort to build stronger economic and strategic ties between the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean regions.
