Qatari authorities have detained former Bangladesh Air Force Chief Sheikh Abdul Hannan following an Interpol notice linked to corruption allegations. The Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission accuses him of amassing unexplained assets worth over Tk 3.28 crore and handling suspicious transactions exceeding Tk 27 crore. This development is part of an ongoing investigation into high-ranking officials from the previous government.
Qatari authorities took former Bangladesh Air Force Chief Marshal Sheikh Abdul Hannan into custody on October 15. The arrest follows an Interpol notification triggered by an active investigation led by the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission. The commission alleges that the retired official accumulated significant wealth beyond his documented income during his tenure as the Chief of Air Staff, a position he held from June 2021 to June 2024.
Investigators have accused Hannan of managing assets valued at more than Tk 3.28 crore that are suspected to be illegitimate. Further scrutiny of six of his personal bank accounts uncovered suspicious transaction volumes totaling Tk 27.63 crore. The probe has also widened to include his family members. Specifically, authorities have accused his wife of holding unexplained assets worth Tk 1.91 crore across 32 distinct bank accounts.
The Anti-Corruption Commission has filed charges under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Money Laundering Prevention Act, and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Before his detention in Qatar, a court in Dhaka had ordered the freezing of his domestic bank accounts and the seizure of properties, including two apartments, in an attempt to secure assets during the investigation. Despite these legal actions and existing travel restrictions, Hannan had managed to leave Bangladesh before being detained.
The investigation remains part of a broader regulatory crackdown targeting high-ranking military and government officials appointed during the administration of the previous government. Authorities claim to have identified a complex network of offshore holdings linked to the former air chief, with evidence suggesting that assets were funneled into Canada and Dubai. Reports also indicate that property interests were discovered under the names of his children in multiple international jurisdictions. The legal process is ongoing as authorities coordinate to address these allegations.
