China Supports India's BRICS Summit But Remains Silent on Xi

China has pledged its support for India's upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled for September 12-13. While Beijing emphasized the importance of the bloc, it did not confirm whether President Xi Jinping will attend in person. The event is a key focus for investors tracking geopolitical stability and trade relations between the two nations.

China has officially stated its support for India's leadership during the upcoming BRICS summit, which is scheduled to take place on September 12-13. During a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning expressed that China highly values cooperation within the BRICS framework and is committed to helping India ensure the success of this year's gathering.

Despite this public show of support, uncertainty remains regarding the participation of top leadership. When asked directly if President Xi Jinping would travel to India for the summit, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson declined to provide a confirmation, noting that there was no specific information to share at this time. This non-committal stance is being monitored by observers for its potential implications on the diplomatic tone between the two countries.

The BRICS bloc has recently undergone significant expansion, now including countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. With Indonesia expected to join the group in 2025, the organization continues to be a central platform for emerging markets to discuss economic and trade policies. India’s role as the current chair places it at the center of these multilateral discussions.

Diplomatic Engagement and Bilateral Ties

Alongside the preparations for the summit, official communication between the two nations continues through established diplomatic channels. Earlier this week, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who previously served as India's Ambassador to China, held discussions with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Hua Chunying.

According to official statements, these talks focused on several key areas, including the implementation of existing agreements between the leaders of both nations, efforts to build political trust, and strategies for managing bilateral differences. For the business community, these meetings are significant as they provide a backdrop for the stability of trade and investment environments. Investors typically track these diplomatic updates to gauge the likelihood of long-term economic cooperation or potential shifts in cross-border trade policies. The primary monitorable in the coming weeks will be any further announcements regarding the attendance list for the summit and whether the high-level diplomatic dialogue results in tangible progress on bilateral trade issues.
