Maintaining Regional Harmony
Addressing the media, Shivakumar emphasized that the decision was taken to ensure that no negative sentiment or protests occur during a period of inter-state tension. The Chief Minister expressed personal respect for Vijay’s political entry but noted that the current environment is not conducive to such a visit. Shivakumar reiterated the need for mutual respect between the neighboring states, highlighting that the core objective is to avoid any public backlash against the actor while ensuring the safety and stability of both regions.
Mekedatu Project and Water Management
Beyond the diplomatic request, the Chief Minister provided an update on the status of the contested Mekedatu balancing reservoir project. Shivakumar reiterated Karnataka's firm stance in favor of the project, asserting that it is designed to benefit both states significantly. He argued that nearly 90 percent of the advantages from the proposed reservoir would reach Tamil Nadu. The state government continues to face challenges due to deficient rainfall, which complicates the management of water resources.
Regarding immediate legal and administrative obligations, the Chief Minister confirmed that Karnataka has begun complying with the directive from the Cauvery Water Management Authority to release 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu over a 15-day period. While he acknowledged that political parties may choose to challenge these directives in the Supreme Court, the state administration remains focused on adhering to legal mandates while balancing the water needs of its own citizens.
