Asian Stocks Recover as Markets Await Fed Rate Decision

Asian markets posted modest gains today as investors braced for the Federal Reserve’s expected 25-basis-point interest rate hike. Global sentiment remains cautious with 10-year US Treasury yields hovering near 5%, a level unseen since 2007.

Asian equities staged a cautious recovery on September 16, 2026, as market sentiment improved slightly after four consecutive sessions of losses. The MSCI Asia-Pacific index, excluding Japan, rose 0.2% as investors redirected their focus toward the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy announcement. Regional performance was led by South Korean shares, which climbed 0.8%.

Global investor sentiment remains sensitive to the US bond market, where the 10-year Treasury yield recently breached the 5% threshold. This represents the highest level for US borrowing costs since 2007. Rising yields often pressure equity markets, particularly in rate-sensitive sectors, as higher borrowing costs can increase operational expenses and reduce investor appetite for riskier assets.

Market expectations for the Federal Reserve’s decision have sharpened, with data indicating a 92.4% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate increase. Investors are carefully observing the central bank’s stance under Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, seeking clarity on the future trajectory of monetary policy in an environment of persistent inflation.

Commodity and digital asset markets also reflected the ongoing uncertainty. Brent crude oil prices settled near $108 a barrel, experiencing volatility following reports of supply disruptions at the Yanbu export hub in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the cryptocurrency sector faced downward pressure after the US Senate rejected proposed crypto-focused legislation. Bitcoin traded near $75,800, while Ether showed minor declines.

As the Fed policy announcement approaches, the US dollar index has remained firm, trading near a two-week high of 99.656. For investors, the most critical monitorable in the coming sessions will be the central bank's updated economic projections and any forward-looking commentary regarding the duration of higher interest rates.
