Afghanistan Proposes Enhanced Trade Links With India Via Chabahar

The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment is seeking to simplify trade procedures and visa processes to boost exports to India. This initiative aims to strengthen economic ties by increasing focus on agriculture, mining, and handicrafts, while leveraging the Chabahar port as a key transit route.

The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) has formally initiated discussions to expand trade and investment channels with India. During a high-level meeting in Kabul between ACCI Chairman Sayed Karim Hashemi and India’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Yatin Patel, the focus was placed on removing administrative barriers and easing visa requirements for business travel between the two nations.

Strategic Importance of the Chabahar Port

A central component of this push is the increased reliance on Iran’s Chabahar port. As transit trade through traditional land routes has faced significant declines, Afghanistan is looking to diversify its supply chains. For India, the Chabahar port is a critical piece of infrastructure, providing a direct gateway to landlocked Afghanistan that bypasses dependency on other regional neighbors. This route is expected to play a major role in lowering logistics costs and improving the reliability of supply chains for goods coming from Afghanistan.

Key Sectors for Collaboration

Trade discussions are currently centering on sectors where Afghanistan maintains a competitive export potential. These include agriculture, minerals, mining resources, and traditional handicrafts. The ACCI’s proposals aim to improve market access in India for these specific commodities. Both nations are now planning to facilitate trade through joint exhibitions and specialized business forums, which are expected to help Afghan exporters connect directly with Indian importers and manufacturers.

Historical Trade Context

For the past five years, bilateral trade between India and Afghanistan has remained relatively stable, hovering around the USD 1 billion mark. India has historically maintained a significant presence in Afghan infrastructure development, most notably through the construction of the Zaranj-Delaram highway, which connects to the Iranian border and facilitates the movement of humanitarian aid and commercial goods.

While these discussions signal a push for increased cooperation, investors and stakeholders monitoring the region should note that trade volume will remain sensitive to regional stability and logistics efficiency. The ability to effectively scale exports from Afghanistan will depend on the successful implementation of the proposed administrative reforms and the long-term consistent operation of the Chabahar port route. Moving forward, the key monitorable for Indian firms interested in these sectors will be the outcome of upcoming joint trade delegations and the actualization of the streamlined business procedures promised by the trade bodies.
