Max Financial Services reported a 33% rise in its Value of New Business to ₹446 crore for the first quarter of FY27, beating market estimates. The company saw strong demand in protection and health segments, while new business margins improved to 23.2%.
Max Financial Services Ltd., the holding company for Max Life Insurance, reported strong financial growth for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The Value of New Business (VNB), a key metric measuring the profitability of new policies sold, rose by 33% to ₹446 crore. This performance outperformed market estimates, which had pegged the figure closer to ₹398 crore.
The company’s profitability on new policies also improved significantly. The VNB margin, which reflects the profit potential of new sales, climbed to 23.2%, compared to 20.1% in the same period last year. Consolidated revenue, excluding income from investments, grew by 18% to ₹7,289 crore. For the quarter, the company reported a profit after tax of ₹118 crore.
Growth was supported by strong demand across several product lines. The protection and health insurance segments for self-employed individuals grew by 44%, while the annuity business saw a 116% expansion. Additionally, the company’s individual first-year premiums increased by 17%, helping it secure a 10.1% share of the private life insurance market. Assets under management at the insurer also crossed the ₹2 lakh crore milestone during the quarter.
While the results show a strong start to the financial year, there are specific factors that investors often monitor in the life insurance sector. Regulatory changes, particularly regarding surrender value norms—the amount policyholders receive if they exit a policy early—remain a point of discussion across the industry as these rules can impact profit margins. Furthermore, Max Life Insurance has a business model that relies significantly on bancassurance partnerships, most notably with Axis Bank. Any changes in the dynamics of these bank partnerships or shifts in market volatility that impact investment income could influence the company’s future financial performance.
Moving forward, shareholders may focus on whether the company can sustain these improved profit margins, especially as competition in the insurance sector remains intense. The company's ability to balance quality growth with disciplined capital management will be a key area to track in the coming quarters.
