IRDAI Issues Warning Against Fake Insurance Grievance Portal

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has flagged a fraudulent website, 'igmsirdai.online', which is impersonating its official grievance platform. Policyholders are warned not to share banking details, KYC documents, or OTPs on this site, as it is a phishing attempt to steal sensitive personal information.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has issued an urgent warning to the public regarding a fraudulent website, 'igmsirdai.online', that is posing as an official channel for resolving insurance complaints. The regulator has clarified that this website is completely unauthorized and has no connection to its official systems.

This fake platform is actively targeting insurance policyholders, attempting to trick them into providing sensitive personal and financial data. The site mimics the look of a government portal to gain trust, a common tactic in phishing scams. IRDAI has cautioned individuals to be extremely careful and to avoid entering any private information, including KYC documents, banking credentials, passwords, or One-Time Passwords (OTPs), on this suspicious domain.

Risks to Data Security

The primary objective of such fraudulent portals is data harvesting. By collecting personal details like policy numbers and banking information, scammers can commit identity theft or unauthorized financial transactions. IRDAI has explicitly stated that no official government insurance portal requests payment of premiums or sensitive banking inputs like passwords through unsolicited links or emails.

For investors and policyholders, this incident highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity in the insurance sector. As insurance companies move more services online, maintaining trust in digital platforms is essential. While this specific event does not involve a direct financial failure, it reminds the public and industry participants that maintaining digital hygiene—such as verifying URLs before clicking—is the first line of defense against cybercrime.

How to Reach the Official Portal

To ensure safety, the regulator advises the public to use only verified, official channels for grievance redressal. The official Insurance Grievance Management System (IGMS) is accessible through the Bima Bharosa portal at the official IRDAI website. Any interaction involving grievances, policy status, or claims should be routed exclusively through these verified government platforms.

The regulator is currently investigating the matter and is pursuing legal action against those responsible for operating the fraudulent site. If you encounter any suspicious activity or have shared details on the fake site, it is recommended to immediately contact your bank and the insurance company associated with your policy to secure your accounts.
