ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has introduced 'iProtect Smart Her,' a term plan featuring a 15% lifetime premium discount and pregnancy-related benefits. The product launch comes as the company focuses on the high-growth retail protection segment, though investors remain focused on trends in customer retention and rising operational costs.
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has unveiled 'iProtect Smart Her,' a new term insurance policy specifically tailored to the financial, health, and wellness needs of women. The product offers a 15% lifetime discount on premiums and a 'pregnancy break' option, allowing policyholders to pause payments during maternity leave without losing their coverage. The plan also includes health management services, such as annual check-ups and teleconsultations, valued up to ₹92,100.
This launch aligns with the company’s push into the retail protection segment, which recorded a strong 60.4% year-on-year growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. By addressing specific demographic needs, the insurer aims to capture a larger share of the protection market, which currently commands higher margins than traditional savings-linked products.
The company’s recent financial results support its growth trajectory. In Q1 FY2027, ICICI Prudential reported a 27.8% year-on-year increase in net profit, totaling ₹386.2 crore. Its Value of New Business (VNB)—a key measure of future profitability for life insurers—grew by 24.9% to ₹571 crore, with VNB margins improving by 220 basis points to 26.7%.
Despite these positive trends, the company faces operational challenges. The 13-month persistency ratio, which tracks how many customers continue their policies, has declined to 84.0% in June 2026 from 86.0% a year earlier. Investors often watch this metric closely, as lower persistency can impact long-term cash flows. Additionally, the company’s cost-to-premium ratio increased by 60 basis points to 21.8%, driven by the expenses associated with shifting the product mix toward protection plans.
Beyond operational metrics, there are potential external factors affecting the stock. There is a possibility of a supply overhang due to an anticipated stake sale by the promoter, Prudential plc, to meet regulatory compliance requirements. Furthermore, the company is currently awaiting regulatory approval for its name change application and promoter reclassification, which adds a layer of uncertainty for shareholders.
The success of the 'iProtect Smart Her' plan will depend on how effectively the company can attract and retain female policyholders in a competitive landscape. For the coming quarters, investors will likely track whether the company can stabilize its persistency levels and manage the rising costs associated with its expanded product portfolio.
