ICICI Lombard Shares Rise 4% As Tech Pivot Targets Margins

ICICI Lombard General Insurance plans to reach 90% digital servicing by FY29 to improve profitability. The strategy follows a challenging Q1 FY27, where the company saw a 46% profit decline and worsening underwriting margins. Investors responded with a 4% rise in stock price following the announcement.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance is launching a major technology-focused strategy to improve its financial performance. During a recent presentation, management announced a goal to move 90% of its customer service processes to digital platforms by FY29. The insurer believes this shift will lower operational costs significantly compared to traditional manual methods and allow for faster product launches, reducing the time to market from six months to four weeks.

This strategic pivot comes after a difficult start to the fiscal year. In the first quarter of FY27, ICICI Lombard reported a 46% year-on-year drop in net profit to ₹403 crore. A key reason for this decline is the company's combined ratio, which climbed to 107.2% in Q1 FY27, compared to 102.9% in the same period last year. In the insurance business, the combined ratio measures profitability. A ratio above 100% means the company is paying out more in claims and expenses than it is collecting in insurance premiums, meaning it must rely on its investment income to stay profitable.

The company is also facing pressure on top-line growth. In Q1 FY27, the company reported Gross Direct Premium Income (GDPI) growth of 7.5%, which trailed the broader industry’s growth rate of 10.9%. The management's new plan aims to address these issues by using artificial intelligence in underwriting and automating back-office tasks, which they hope will help the company regain its competitive edge.

While the market responded positively with a 4% rise in the stock price, investors are monitoring several risks. The tech-led plan is ambitious and assumes that digital savings will successfully offset the current underwriting stress. Additionally, the insurance sector is facing high claims inflation and intense competition in commercial segments, which can hurt profit margins regardless of digital efficiency. Furthermore, ongoing regulatory reforms regarding commission structures by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) create uncertainty for the entire industry.

For investors, the most important update to follow will be the company’s ability to improve its combined ratio in upcoming quarters. Success will depend on whether this digital infrastructure can actually reduce costs and improve underwriting quality, or if external factors like high claims continue to keep profit margins under pressure.
