ICICI Life Insurance shares dropped 4% from the day’s high on Tuesday, trading near 52-week lows after reporting a 25% year-on-year profit increase to ₹374.22 crore. Investors appear concerned about a 3.1% sequential decline in quarterly profit, even as the insurer posted strong operational growth in the retail and annuity segments.
Shares of ICICI Life Insurance came under selling pressure during Tuesday’s trading session on the National Stock Exchange. Despite the company reporting a solid 25% year-on-year growth in net profit for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, the stock fell 4% from its intraday peak of ₹465.20 to trade around ₹446.30. This price movement keeps the stock trading close to its 52-week low of ₹441.80, a significant drop from its 52-week high of ₹706.80 reached earlier this year.
The market’s cautious reaction seems driven by the performance comparison between quarters rather than just the year-on-year growth. While the insurer reported a net profit of ₹374.22 crore for the quarter ended September 2026—up from ₹299.26 crore in the same period a year ago—the profit figure actually declined by 3.1% when compared to the ₹386.18 crore reported in the previous quarter ending June 2026. This sequential dip appears to be a key factor weighing on investor sentiment.
On the operational front, the insurer showed signs of expansion in specific business areas. Net premium income rose by 16.6% year-on-year, reaching ₹13,803.90 crore. The first half of the fiscal year saw a total net profit of ₹760 crore, reflecting a 26.5% increase compared to the same period last year. The value of new business grew by 22.3% to ₹1,283 crore, with the company maintaining a margin of 26%. Specific growth drivers included the retail protection and annuity segments, which saw Annual Premium Equivalent (APE) growth of 47.2% and 50%, respectively. By the end of September, the company's total assets under management reached ₹3.29 lakh crore, while it maintained a claim settlement ratio of 99.3%.
Beyond the earnings, the company is undergoing structural changes. It recently completed a rebranding, changing its name from ICICI Prudential Life Insurance to ICICI Life Insurance Limited, a move that became effective on September 22, 2026. Additionally, the company is navigating a leadership transition, with Sidharatha Mishra set to join the board as an Additional Director effective October 14, 2026.
For investors, the immediate focus remains on whether the company can reverse the sequential profit trend in the coming quarters. The current stock price, hovering near 52-week lows, reflects broader caution regarding insurance sector earnings and potential volatility in financial markets. Future performance will depend on the sustainability of margins in the protection and annuity segments and the company's ability to maintain growth momentum despite the recent dip in quarterly profitability.
