Affluent Indians Boost Term Insurance as Coverage Hits Multi-Crore Levels

Term insurance bookings by affluent Indians have doubled since April 2023, with average coverage rising by 30%. Younger professionals are opting for larger, comprehensive policies, signaling a shift in financial risk management preferences.

Affluent individuals in India are increasingly prioritizing substantial term life insurance to secure their financial future. Recent industry data shows that bookings for term insurance among high-net-worth individuals have doubled since April 2023. This trend is not just about more policies, but also about the size of the coverage, with the average sum assured rising by 30% as wealthy buyers move away from basic protection toward higher-value plans.

Younger Professionals Drive Demand

A notable shift in the demographic profile shows that nearly half of these high-value term insurance buyers are under 35 years old. This suggests that younger, affluent professionals are planning for risk management earlier in their careers. The demand for significant coverage is clear, with policies offering a sum assured of ₹3 crore or more growing by 25%. A small segment of these buyers is now securing coverage of ₹10 crore or more, highlighting the shift toward ultra-high-net-worth protection.

Geographically, major urban centers are leading the way. Bengaluru and Hyderabad are at the forefront of total booking volumes, while cities like Mumbai, Gurugram, and Faridabad see the highest average sum assured per policy. For salaried affluent customers, an average life cover of approximately ₹2 crore has become common, though policies as large as ₹25 crore are also being recorded.

Focus on Comprehensive Protection

There is a clear trend toward pure protection rather than savings-linked products. Less than 5% of this segment is choosing 'Term Return of Premium' plans, which return the premium amount at the end of the term. Instead, buyers are focusing on limited-pay structures, where premium payments are completed by age 60 to align with peak earning years.

Beyond basic death benefits, these buyers are also customizing their plans with specialized riders. Accidental total and permanent disability cover is the most popular add-on, chosen by 20% of the demographic, followed by critical illness coverage at 15%. This indicates a preference for comprehensive wealth protection that addresses multiple risks rather than just life cover.

Investor Monitorables in the Insurance Sector

For investors monitoring the life insurance sector, this trend toward high-value term protection is significant. Term insurance is generally a high-margin product for insurers compared to traditional endowment or savings plans. As the product mix shifts toward pure protection, companies with a strong focus on the term segment may benefit from better profit margins.

However, the sector remains highly competitive. The ability of insurers to maintain underwriting quality while capturing this growing demand for large, multi-crore policies will be a key performance indicator. Investors should track shifts in the product mix, claim settlement ratios for large-ticket policies, and the effectiveness of distribution channels in reaching this younger, digitally-savvy affluent demographic.
