Short Description :

The Expert Advisory Committee (EAC) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has recommended environmental clearance for ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel's (AM/NS) ₹1.5 lakh crore Greenfield steel plant in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh. The facility will have an initial capacity of 8.2 MTPA, expandable to 24 MTPA, utilizing advanced, low-emission technologies. This major project, fast-tracked by the Andhra Pradesh government, is expected to significantly boost the region's economy, create numerous jobs, and enhance local manufacturing and exports.

Detailed Coverage :

The Expert Advisory Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has given its recommendation for environmental clearance for a significant ₹1.5 lakh crore Greenfield steel plant project by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AM/NS) in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh. This project represents a substantial investment in India's industrial sector.

The plant is planned to be developed in phases, with the first phase aiming for an integrated steel capacity of 8.2 million metric tonnes per annum (MTPA). The ultimate expansion goal is to reach 24 MTPA. AM/NS plans to employ state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, and low-emission technologies, adhering to global standards for sustainability and carbon management.

Aditya Mittal, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal and Managing Director of AM/NS, expressed satisfaction with the Andhra Pradesh government's swift land allocation and support, envisioning the plant as a hub for innovation, sustainability, and employment. Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh's Minister for IT, Electronics, HRD, RTGS, highlighted the project as a testament to efficient governance and its potential to transform the economic landscape of coastal Andhra Pradesh, generating significant employment and boosting manufacturing and exports.

All major approvals for this project have been secured in a record timeline of approximately 14 months, with the government providing single-window facilitation. The foundation stone for the plant is slated to be laid during the CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam in November 2025.

Impact This approval is a major step towards realizing a large-scale industrial project that could significantly boost the steel sector, create substantial employment opportunities, and drive economic growth in Andhra Pradesh. It indicates a favorable environment for large foreign direct investments in India's manufacturing capabilities. Rating: 8/10
