UltraTech Cement Reports Q2 Profit Rise, Announces Board Changes

UltraTech Cement reported a 21% rise in net profit to Rs 1,494 crore, despite seasonal monsoon pressures. The company also announced that Managing Director KC Jhanwar will transition to non-executive vice chairman starting January 2027, succeeding KK Maheshwari.

UltraTech Cement has announced a leadership transition scheduled for the beginning of 2027. Managing Director Kailash Chandra Jhanwar is set to move into the role of non-executive vice chairman effective January 1, 2027. He will succeed KK Maheshwari, who is stepping down from the position due to personal and professional commitments. This change coincides with the company's financial report for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,494 crore for the July-September period, which is a 21% increase compared to the Rs 1,232 crore profit recorded in the same quarter last year. Revenue from operations also grew, reaching Rs 23,295 crore, up 19% from the Rs 19,607 crore reported a year ago. Despite these year-on-year gains, the company faced a challenging quarter when compared to the immediate past three months. Net profit declined 43% from the Rs 2,599 crore reported in the first quarter of this fiscal year, and revenue saw a sequential dip of 5.5%.

The decline in sequential performance highlights the impact of the monsoon season, which typically slows construction activity across India and impacts cement demand. The company also noted that operating costs increased, with total consolidated expenses reaching Rs 21,339 crore, an 18% rise compared to the same period last year. This increase in expenses put pressure on profit margins. The net profit margin was 7% for the quarter, down from 11% in the preceding quarter, while the operating profit margin remained flat at 16%.

Despite these short-term hurdles, UltraTech Cement reported strong volume growth. Domestic grey cement sales volumes increased by nearly 14% to 35.94 million tonnes during the quarter. The company stated that this growth was driven by disciplined operational execution and its strategy to increase sales of higher-margin premium products. However, the company also acknowledged that ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia added to the operational pressure, likely affecting energy and logistics costs.

Looking ahead, investors may focus on how the company manages margin pressure as the peak construction season begins following the monsoon. The ability of the company to maintain volume growth while controlling costs will be important to track in the coming quarters. Furthermore, the leadership transition will be monitored as the company moves into the next phase of its growth strategy under new board guidance. The upcoming financial results will provide more clarity on whether the company can recover its profit margins and sustain the demand momentum seen in its volume figures.
