UltraTech Cement Q1 Volume Rises 12% Amid Persistent Cost Pressures

UltraTech Cement reported 12% volume growth for the June quarter, crossing 200 million tonnes in total capacity. While the company gained market share, rising fuel and packaging costs continue to squeeze profit margins. Investors are tracking how the company manages cost inflation and intense industry competition through the rest of the year.

Detailed Coverage

UltraTech Cement, India's largest cement producer, has released its financial results for the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. The company reported a 16% rise in revenue, supported by a 12% year-on-year increase in sales volumes, which reached 41.3 million tonnes. By outpacing the estimated industry growth of 7-8%, the company has demonstrated its ability to capture more market share, particularly through sustained demand in the housing and rural infrastructure sectors.

Operational Costs and Profitability

Despite the growth in sales, profitability remains a core concern for investors. The company reported an EBITDA per tonne of ₹1,214 for the quarter. While this level has been maintained for two consecutive periods, it reflects a sequential decline. The business is currently managing higher input costs, with fuel and packaging expenses rising in the first quarter. Specifically, fuel costs increased as consumption prices moved from ₹1.78/kcal in the previous quarter to ₹1.90/kcal. Management anticipates these cost pressures to persist into the second quarter, with overall inflation projected to add another ₹130-140 per tonne to operating costs.

Expansion and Capital Spending

UltraTech Cement continues to pursue aggressive expansion. During the first quarter, the company added 8.7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of new capacity, bringing its total domestic grey cement capacity to 200.1 mtpa. This is part of a larger plan to reach 207 mtpa by the end of this fiscal year and 237 mtpa by the end of FY28. The company has planned a capital expenditure of ₹17,000 crore for the next few years, which management intends to fund through internal cash flow. Investors may monitor whether this high level of spending, combined with rising costs, impacts the company's financial flexibility in the coming quarters.

Competitive Environment and Risks

Looking ahead, the company faces a challenging environment. The broader cement sector is preparing for an estimated 180 mtpa of new industry capacity to be added between FY26 and FY28, which could intensify pricing pressure and limit the company's ability to pass on cost increases to customers. Additionally, concerns regarding monsoon patterns and their impact on rural construction activity remain a factor. With the stock trading at an estimated FY28 EV/EBITDA multiple of approximately 16 times, market watchers are cautious about whether current valuations reflect these near-term earnings pressures. The final impact on shareholders will depend on the company’s ability to improve logistics efficiency and transition toward higher renewable energy usage to offset rising operational expenses.
