UltraTech Cement Q1 Profit Rises 16% Amid Volume Growth

UltraTech Cement reported a 16% year-on-year rise in profit for Q1 FY27, reaching Rs 26.1 billion. While revenue and sales volumes grew, the company expects near-term pressure from seasonal factors and fuel costs.

Detailed Coverage

UltraTech Cement, India's largest cement producer, has posted a steady financial performance for the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. The company reported a consolidated revenue of Rs 246 billion, marking a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. Profit after tax also saw a similar growth of 16%, climbing to Rs 26.1 billion.

Operational Performance and Sales Volumes

During the April-June quarter, the company saw its cement sales volume rise by 12% year-on-year, touching 41.3 million tonnes. This growth reflects the company’s ability to maintain its market reach despite the challenges typically associated with the pre-monsoon and monsoon periods. The blended realization per tonne—the average price earned by the company for every tonne sold—showed a modest increase of 3%, reaching Rs 5,967. Operating profit, or EBITDA, reached Rs 50 billion, supported by consistent demand across major housing and infrastructure sectors.

Cost Pressures and Financial Health

While growth figures remain positive, the company faces potential profit margin pressure in the coming months. Management indicated that the second quarter of FY27 may be influenced by higher fuel costs and regular maintenance cycles for its production kilns. Variable costs are anticipated to increase by approximately Rs 130 to Rs 140 per tonne sequentially. Despite these near-term operational challenges, the company maintains a stable balance sheet. At the end of the first quarter, the net debt-to-EBITDA ratio stood at 0.87x, reflecting a slight improvement from 0.94x at the end of the previous fiscal year. Keeping this ratio below 1.0x remains a key financial priority for the company as it manages its capital spending.

Outlook and Industry Context

The company continues to focus on achieving double-digit volume growth for the full fiscal year. This ambition is supported by ongoing infrastructure projects and sustained activity in the urban housing and commercial real estate sectors. For investors, the balance between volume growth and the management of input costs like fuel will be critical. The next phase for the company involves monitoring how these cost variables impact the operating margin during the second quarter and whether the sustained demand in the infrastructure segment can offset the planned maintenance costs. As of the latest trading session, the stock was trading at Rs 11,903.
