US Tariffs Cripple Maharashtra's Smaller Cities, Exports Plummet, Jobs Threatened
Overview

US tariffs are crippling manufacturing in Maharashtra's second-tier cities. Garment, terry towel, and auto component exports to America have halted or plummeted in Solapur, Kolhapur, and Sangli. Local industrialists face order cancellations, risking thousands of jobs and severe economic disruption. The state government acknowledges the crisis but has yet to implement concrete aid.

Tariff Impact Deepens in Western Maharashtra

United States tariffs are now significantly impacting Maharashtra's secondary cities, disrupting exports in garments, terry towels, and auto components and raising fears of widespread job losses. While major economic hubs like Mumbai and Pune have somewhat weathered the storm, the strain is acutely felt in cities such as Solapur, Kolhapur, and Sangli.

Solapur's Textile Sector Faces Crisis

In Solapur, approximately 15 garment units that relied on exporting products to the US through merchant exporters have seen their order flow completely cease. Terry towels, a major component of Solapur's textile output, previously saw about 25% of its estimated ₹800 crore annual production exported to the US. This vital export channel is now closed, creating immense pressure on local manufacturers. Local industrialists are urgently seeking alternative markets to salvage their businesses.

Kolhapur and Sangli See Export Disruptions

Data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics highlights fluctuating export trends for Kolhapur district's foundry cluster. While total exports to countries other than the US have seen an increase, shipments to the US have stagnated or declined. Similarly, Sangli district reported auto component exports worth ₹99.96 crore and textile exports of ₹4.71 crore to the US in 2024-25. However, figures for 2025-26, even in the early months, show a sharp drop.

Government Promises Action Amidst Worker Fears

The potential fallout is substantial, with an estimated 15,000 workers in Solapur's textile industry facing job insecurity if the tariff stalemate persists. A leading industrialist in Solapur stated that despite government assurances, no concrete steps have been taken, and many industries are already reducing their workforce. Businessman Prashant Pawar from Sangli emphasized that small units are struggling to retain staff, urging the Union government to resolve the tariff issue swiftly. Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal confirmed that a government committee is studying the impact and will recommend mitigation strategies to support affected industries.
