Tata Power Plans New Odisha Solar Plant to Scale Renewables

Tata Power is set to announce a new solar manufacturing facility in Odisha, aiming to capitalize on rising electricity demand from AI and data centers. The company currently manages over 26 GW in total generation capacity, with a strong focus on transitioning to green energy. This expansion follows the successful turnaround of its Odisha distribution utilities, which are now profitable and contributing dividends.

Tata Power is expanding its manufacturing footprint with plans to establish a new solar plant in Odisha, according to company chairman N. Chandrasekaran. This initiative aligns with the company's broader strategy to scale its clean energy portfolio, which currently accounts for 66% of its total generation capacity. As the company continues its transition toward sustainable energy, it is positioning itself to meet the surge in electricity demand driven by data centers, artificial intelligence, and increased cooling requirements.

Scaling Renewable Capacity

The company has maintained an aggressive pace in its renewable energy rollout. During the fiscal year 2026, Tata Power commissioned approximately 2.5 GW of new renewable projects. Currently, the organization has a substantial pipeline, with 5.1 GW of projects under execution. Beyond generation, the company is investing in energy storage to manage intermittency, specifically progressing on the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri and 1,800 MW Shirwata pumped hydro storage projects.

Manufacturing and Operational Footprint

Manufacturing remains a cornerstone of the company’s growth. Its 4.3 GW solar cell and module facility in Tirunelveli has completed its first full year of operations, providing a domestic supply chain advantage. On the consumer-facing side, the rooftop solar segment has reached a cumulative capacity of over 4 GW, serving more than three lakh customers. Additionally, the company is scaling its electric vehicle infrastructure, having crossed the 2 lakh mark for cumulative home EV charger installations.

Odisha Distribution Turnaround

Tata Power's experience in Odisha serves as a key indicator of its operational efficiency. Five years after entering the state's power distribution sector, the company has successfully transitioned all four of its acquired utilities to profitability. These entities have reached a stage where they are now paying dividends. A significant contributor to this success has been the focus on reducing losses; the company reported that aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses have fallen by 15 percentage points since acquisition, including a 2-percentage-point improvement in the most recent fiscal year.

The transmission and distribution network now spans 7,000 circuit kilometers, with an additional 1,800 circuit kilometers under development. With a total consumer base of 13.1 million across its distribution companies in Delhi, Mumbai, Ajmer, and Odisha, the company’s focus remains on grid stability and infrastructure investment. Investors may track the specific timeline and capacity details of the upcoming Odisha manufacturing project, as well as the progress on major storage projects, which will be essential to evaluate the company's long-term capital spending and operational efficiency.
