Siemens Q1 Profit Rises on Asset Sale, Core Margins Slip

Siemens posted a 407% profit jump to INR 2,143 crore in Q1FY27, driven by a one-time gain from selling its Low Voltage Motors business. However, core operating margins fell 340 basis points due to cost pressures, prompting Motilal Oswal to cut earnings estimates while keeping a Neutral rating. Investors are balancing a robust order book against these ongoing margin headwinds.

Siemens Limited has released its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, presenting a performance that requires investors to look beyond the headline profit figure. The company reported a significant net profit of INR 2,143 crore, a 407% increase compared to the same period last year. However, this jump was largely driven by a one-time gain of INR 2,099 crore from the sale of its Low Voltage Motors (LVM) business. When this one-off item is excluded, the core operational picture reveals underlying pressure on profitability.

Core Operations and Margin Pressure

While revenue grew by 15% year-on-year to INR 4,714 crore, the company's operating performance showed signs of stress. Core EBITDA declined by 17% to INR 431 crore, and margins contracted by 340 basis points to 9.15%. This margin compression has been attributed to the volatility in commodity prices and currency fluctuations, specifically the impact of the EUR/INR exchange rate. These factors are particularly challenging for the company's Smart Infrastructure segment, which handles many short-cycle projects where costs cannot always be immediately passed on to customers.

Order Book Resilience

Despite the margin challenges, the company’s ability to secure business remains strong. Siemens reported a 16.5% growth in order inflow, which reached INR 6,328 crore for the quarter. This consistency has helped build a substantial total order book of INR 467 billion. These orders, spanning areas like automation, grid modernization, and data center development, provide visibility into future revenue. For investors, this strong order pipeline is the primary supporting factor against the current operational volatility.

Analyst Outlook and Estimates

Following the results, Motilal Oswal maintained a 'Neutral' rating on the stock. While the brokerage raised its price target to INR 3,600 from INR 3,500, it simultaneously reduced its earnings estimates for FY27 and FY28 by 8% and 2%, respectively. This downward revision reflects a more cautious view on how quickly the company can navigate the current commodity and currency-related margin headwinds. The target price increase is largely a reflection of rolling forward the valuation to future estimated earnings rather than an upgrade to the company's near-term growth outlook.

Moving forward, investors will need to monitor whether Siemens can improve its core operating margins in the coming quarters. The key focus areas will be the company’s ability to manage commodity cost inflation and the execution speed of its large order book without further erosion in profitability. Any signs of stabilization in input costs or improved pricing power in the Smart Infrastructure segment will be crucial indicators for the stock's future performance.
