Shiva Cement Gets Odisha Mine Nod for 2.4 MTPA Dolomite Mining

Shiva Cement, a JSW Cement subsidiary, has received clearance to mine 2.4 million tonnes of dolomite annually from its Odisha block. This approval enables the company to start a new merchant sales stream and improves raw material supply for the JSW group. Investors should monitor how this additional revenue source impacts the company's profitability as it scales its cement and clinker capacity across India.

Detailed Coverage

Shiva Cement, which operates under the JSW Cement umbrella, has received modified environmental clearance to extract dolomite from its Khatkurbahal (North) Block in Sundargarh, Odisha. This regulatory update allows the company to reach an extraction capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per annum for dolomite. The site holds estimated total reserves of 89.09 million tonnes, with about 48.29 million tonnes considered mineable.

This approval changes the operational scope of the mining block, which was previously focused primarily on limestone. By adding dolomite to its output, Shiva Cement can now tap into a merchant sales channel, selling the mineral to industries such as steel, glass, and refractories. Dolomite is a widely used material in these sectors, providing the company with an opportunity to diversify its income beyond traditional cement sales.

For the JSW ecosystem, this move is part of a larger plan to secure raw materials internally. By controlling the supply of minerals from mines near the borders of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand, the company aims to support its broader expansion. JSW Cement is currently working toward a capacity target of 41.85 million tonnes per annum for grinding and 13.04 million tonnes per annum for clinker. The proximity of these mines to the manufacturing facilities is intended to help manage logistics costs, which are a major factor in the cement and mineral business.

Management has noted that commercializing these dolomite reserves is expected to unlock value from existing assets. However, the financial benefit for shareholders will depend on the company's ability to execute mining operations efficiently and find stable demand for the dolomite in the merchant market. As the company moves to increase its production footprint, investors may track the actual production volumes, the speed at which the dolomite operations reach full capacity, and how these additional revenues influence the company's overall profit margins.

Monitoring the execution timeline remains essential, as industrial projects in the mining sector can occasionally face delays due to regulatory compliance or operational challenges. Investors should also watch for further updates on how this new revenue stream contributes to the company's bottom line in upcoming quarterly filings, as the success of this expansion will be measured by its contribution to consistent earnings growth.
