SEPC Secures ₹854 Crore SAIL Order, Order Book Crosses ₹10,000 Crore

SEPC Limited has signed an ₹854.57 crore contract with the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) for its Burnpur facility. This win pushes the company's total order book past the ₹10,000 crore milestone. While the new project marks a strategic expansion, investors may note the company's recent quarterly losses and ongoing focus on managing execution and liquidity challenges.

SEPC Limited has finalized a significant contract worth ₹854.57 crore with the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). This agreement, signed on October 8, 2026, focuses on the Balance of Plant requirements for the pellet plant at the IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal. The project scope involves extensive civil and structural construction, which the company is scheduled to execute over a 32-month timeline.

Order Book Milestone and Strategic Shift

This contract is a key development for the engineering firm, as it pushes its consolidated order book past the ₹10,000 crore threshold. The company has been actively bidding for large-scale turnkey solutions across the power, water, and metallurgy sectors. By securing this project, SEPC aims to strengthen its execution presence in the West Bengal region. However, the benefits of this expansion will depend on the company's ability to complete the project within the planned timeframe and budget.

Financial Context and Execution Risks

While the increase in the order book is a positive sign for future revenue potential, investors are also tracking the company's recent financial health. In the June 2026 quarter (Q1 FY27), SEPC reported a net loss of ₹11 crore, despite a 40% year-on-year rise in revenue. The company has faced margin pressure in some operations, a common challenge in the tender-based engineering, procurement, and construction sector.

Historically, the company has dealt with execution hurdles, such as project delays and liquidity constraints, which have previously influenced its credit profile. Profitability remains sensitive to raw material price volatility, which can impact bottom-line results if not managed effectively. The business model is also working capital-intensive, meaning the company requires steady cash flow to support its ongoing projects.

Recent Legal Resolution and Market Reaction

On a more positive note, the company recently resolved a significant legal dispute. On October 1, 2026, the Madras High Court settled a matter involving ₹149.5 crore. This resolution allowed the company to lift attachments on ₹154 crore of receivables without any direct cash outflow, which may provide some relief to its liquidity position.

Following the announcement of the SAIL contract, the company's stock experienced a positive reaction, rising approximately 11% on October 9, 2026. It is worth noting that the stock has been volatile, with a year-to-date decline of about 47%. Looking ahead, the most important updates for investors will be the actual progress of the Burnpur project, the trend in operating margins in the coming quarters, and the company's success in managing its working capital requirements while scaling its project execution.
