Advanced Biomanufacturing Hub
Praj Industries has launched a cutting-edge, AI-powered precision fermentation laboratory at its Praj Matrix R&D center in Pune. The facility is designed to boost high-capacity bioprocesses, aiming to significantly improve efficiency, reduce scale-up risks, and increase overall process reliability. This lab will help Praj Industries and its subsidiary, Praj HiPurity Systems, provide advanced fermentation solutions for key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, biofuels, and beverages.
Praj HiPurity Systems is known for its specialized precision fermenters and ultra-pure water systems, crucial for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Integrating AI into these processes marks a major advance in optimizing bioreactor performance and product yield.
Strategic Academia-Industry Alliance
Alongside the lab's launch, Praj Industries has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council – National Centre for Cell Science (BRIC-NCCS). This partnership supports the Indian government's BioE3 Initiative (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment), which is managed by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of the DBT, highlighted how crucial partnerships between academia and industry are for advancing India's bioeconomy. He noted that such initiatives are essential for promoting research that moves from the lab to practical application and for building national expertise in biotechnology, thereby speeding up innovation and strengthening the country's bio-based economy.
Driving Decarbonization and Innovation
Pramod Chaudhari, founder and chairman of Praj Industries, called the lab a significant step in the company's innovation path. He explained that it combines biology, engineering, and digital technologies to create scalable, low-carbon solutions. Together with the BRIC-NCCS partnership, this work will speed up the shift from laboratory discovery to commercial biomanufacturing.
The facility is intended as a model for future collaborations between academia and industry. It will concentrate on developing advanced bioprocessing skills, discovering new biomolecules and microbial strains, offering practical training for PhD students, and encouraging joint research projects. BRIC-NCCS will bring its expertise in microbial research, genomics, and cell culture collections, creating strong teamwork with Praj's process development and high-purity manufacturing skills.
Praj Matrix, Praj Industries' innovation hub, holds more than 300 national and international patents. Its existing technologies in biofuels, biopolymers, and biobitumen have already made significant contributions to decarbonization efforts, showing the company's dedication to sustainable solutions used worldwide.
