Optiemus Infracom shares jumped 14% after the government mandated Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for smartphone screen protectors by April 2027. This move aims to curb low-quality imports, favoring domestic manufacturers. The company, which produces RhinoTech screen protectors, has set ambitious revenue targets for this segment, though investors should watch for competition and execution timelines.
Optiemus Infracom shares rose 14% on Tuesday following the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s announcement regarding new quality standards for smartphone screen protectors. Under the updated Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021, all screen protectors sold in India will require Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification starting April 1, 2027. The government initiative is designed to filter out the influx of low-cost, unverified imports that currently dominate the massive Indian market, which sees upwards of 550 million units sold annually.
This regulatory update serves as a strategic advantage for domestic manufacturers who have already invested in certified infrastructure. Optiemus Infracom has actively positioned itself in this space with its RhinoTech brand, launched in August 2025. The company produces these screen protectors at its Noida facility using technology licensed from the US-based Corning Incorporated. Management has projected significant growth for this segment, with internal estimates targeting potential revenues between ₹2,000 crore and ₹2,800 crore by March 2027.
However, the path to achieving these targets comes with business challenges. The April 2027 deadline provides a long lead time, meaning the market shift will not happen overnight. While the mandate curbs unorganized players, Optiemus will still face competition from other established brands that are also likely to secure BIS certification. The success of this strategy will depend on the company’s ability to keep its manufacturing costs low while maintaining competitive pricing against peers. Investors should also note that relying on licensed technology introduces a level of dependence on external partners. Additionally, scaling production capacity to capture a large share of the 550 million-unit market requires significant capital spending and high operational efficiency.
The real impact for shareholders will depend on how quickly the company can ramp up its Noida facility and whether the demand for certified, premium screen protectors materializes as expected. Future monitorables include the company's progress in acquiring orders, the pace at which the broader market adopts these standards, and whether the management can sustain healthy profit margins amidst the transition in the screen protector industry.
