Novonesis Plans ₹3,000 Crore Maharashtra Expansion

Danish bio-solutions major Novonesis is investing up to ₹3,000 crore in its Maharashtra manufacturing unit over the next three years. The expansion, which targets unused land at the Patalganga site, accompanies a strong global earnings report and a €1 billion share buyback program. Shares rose nearly 9% on August 20, 2026, following the dual announcement.

Novonesis, the Danish bio-solutions firm formed through the 2024 merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen, has unveiled plans to invest between ₹2,500 crore and ₹3,000 crore in Maharashtra over the next two to three years. The capital expenditure is aimed at scaling up production capacity at the company's existing manufacturing facility in Patalganga.

Patalganga Facility Upgrade

The Patalganga site is central to this investment strategy, as only about 10% of the total land at the location is currently in use. By leveraging this existing real estate, the company plans to increase its capacity for enzymes and biological technologies that serve the biofuels, food, and agriculture sectors. In addition to Patalganga, the firm maintains operations in Wada, Maharashtra.

These capacity additions are part of a broader push to meet rising demand for bio-solutions. The company's technology is already used across more than 30 industries in India. Recent applications include yeast technologies that reduce fermentation time by approximately 25%, helping to lower energy consumption, and biological treatments tested in Karnataka that have shown potential to increase sugarcane yields by up to 15%.

Strong Global Results and Market Reaction

The announcement of the India expansion coincided with the company’s financial results for the first half of 2026. Novonesis reported an 8% organic sales growth and has raised its organic sales growth guidance for the full year to a range of 7% to 8%. Simultaneously, the firm announced an inaugural €1 billion multi-year share buyback program.

Following the release of these positive global financial results and the updated guidance, the company's shares climbed approximately 8.5% to 9% on August 20, 2026. Investors have responded positively to the combination of growth-oriented investments in markets like India and the return of capital via the share buyback program.

Regulatory Landscape in India

While the company is moving forward with its expansion, management has acknowledged specific operational challenges. Krishna Mohan Puvvada, Regional President for the Middle East, India, and Africa, has pointed to regulatory hurdles, particularly within the Indian agricultural sector, as a key constraint. These challenges have, at times, slowed the wider adoption of biological solutions.

For investors, the primary monitorables moving forward will be the timeline for commissioning the new capacity at Patalganga and the company's ability to navigate the regulatory environment in India to expand its market share in the bio-solutions and biogas sectors. The firm’s ability to maintain its margin profile while funding large-scale capacity additions will also remain a factor to track in coming quarters.
