Novelis Advances Alabama Plant; June Shipments Expected

Novelis Inc., a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries, is preparing its massive $5 billion Bay Minette aluminum plant for commercial shipments by the June quarter. While recent earnings show strong growth, the project's heavy capital spending has pushed debt levels up, creating a key area for investors to monitor.

Novelis Inc., the aluminum business owned by India’s Hindalco Industries, is moving closer to full operations at its new facility in Bay Minette, Alabama. The project is a major $5 billion investment. The company has confirmed that production of cast ingots will begin during the current quarter.

This facility is a centerpiece for the company's growth strategy in North America. By late September 2026, the company had already spent $4.4 billion on this project. A key milestone was reached in September when the cold mill produced its first coil. The next step is starting the hot mill, which is planned for the March 2027 quarter. Full commercial shipments are expected to start in the June quarter of 2027, marking a shift from the construction phase to active production.

The company’s core business performance appears solid. In the quarter ending September 2026, Novelis reported a profit of $210 million, an increase of 29% compared to the previous year. Revenue also grew by 25% to reach $5.9 billion. This operational performance provides a financial foundation as the company manages the heavy costs of the new facility.

However, the massive scale of this investment brings financial pressure. As of the end of the September 2026 quarter, the company’s net leverage ratio—a measure of how much debt it carries relative to its earnings—stood at 4.7x. This elevated level of debt is largely a result of the substantial borrowing required to fund the Alabama project. Investors are closely watching this figure, as high debt requires steady cash flow to manage interest payments and repayments.

For shareholders of Hindalco, the path forward involves managing this debt load while ensuring the new plant starts generating revenue on schedule. The key monitorable for the coming quarters will be how quickly the company can ramp up production to start generating cash from the Alabama facility. Investors may also track management commentary on plans to bring down debt levels as the project moves from construction to full production. Any delays in the timeline for commercial shipments could lead to the debt burden remaining elevated for a longer period than originally anticipated.
