GMR Group founder and chairman G M Rao announced that the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport, being developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL), will be operational by June 2026, ahead of its initial timeline. A significant feature of this Greenfield airport project, located in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, is the development of an integrated aerospace ecosystem on 500 acres. This ecosystem will host the world's largest Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) unit, attracting global aerospace and defence manufacturers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Research and Development units, and training providers. The Public Private Partnership (PPP) model project will have an initial passenger capacity of six million, which is scalable.
Impact This development is poised to significantly boost India's aviation and aerospace sector. It will attract foreign investment, foster technological advancements, and create thousands of skilled and semi-skilled jobs. The establishment of a large MRO unit will reduce the reliance on foreign facilities for aircraft maintenance, saving foreign exchange and positioning India as a hub for aviation services. This is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the regional economy and ancillary industries.
Difficult Terms Explained: Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO): This refers to the servicing of aircraft, including regular checks, repairs for damage, and complete overhauls to ensure safety and airworthiness.
