Kobelco Construction Equipment India has launched three new excavator models to capture rising domestic infrastructure demand. The company is raising its local manufacturing content to 68% to improve efficiency and aims for a revenue of ₹2,500 crore. Investors may monitor how the company balances its export business with local competition amid shifting government tender standards.
Kobelco Construction Equipment India (KCEI) has expanded its product portfolio with three new excavator models in the 19.1-24 tonne category to capture demand in the Indian infrastructure sector. The company projects the domestic hydraulic excavator market will grow to approximately 33,000 units this year, up from 31,000 units. While project execution by the National Highways Authority of India has seen a slowdown, the company notes that state-level spending in irrigation, rural connectivity, and urban development is supporting industry demand.
The new models are being manufactured at the company's plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. This facility has attracted roughly ₹900 crore in investments since 2011. Currently, the plant produces between 2,800 and 2,900 units annually. Kobelco plans to ramp up production to reach a capacity of 3,500 units within two years to meet both domestic and export requirements.
A significant part of the company's strategy involves increasing local manufacturing content, which has risen to 68% from 48%. This shift is largely attributed to the replacement of imported Hino engines with locally sourced engines from Cummins. By increasing local sourcing, the company aims to improve cost efficiencies and stabilize its supply chain. This is part of a broader effort to reach a revenue target of ₹2,500 crore, an increase from the ₹2,000 crore reported last year.
The competitive environment remains a key factor for the company. Kobelco estimates that Chinese manufacturers currently hold about 33-34% of the Indian market, down from a peak of 40% during the downturn in the Chinese real estate sector. To expand its market share, Kobelco is focusing on high-growth regions such as Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The company is also mindful of external risks, such as geopolitical volatility and global shipping constraints, which could affect its export operations that currently represent one-third of its total volume.
Investors may continue to track how the company navigates these market conditions. Key areas to monitor include the company's ability to maintain its localization benefits while managing potential fluctuations in demand. Future performance will also depend on how government tender quality standards evolve, which the company expects will help stabilize the pace of large-scale infrastructure projects.
