Project Genesis
Ponnani port in Kerala's Malappuram district is poised for a significant industrial upgrade with the upcoming establishment of a large shipbuilding yard. Officials confirmed the tender process for this ambitious project, slated to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, has concluded. This initiative is spearheaded by the Kerala Maritime Board and is set to become the state's second major shipyard after Kochi.
Investment and Phases
The shipyard will occupy approximately 29 acres of coastal land adjacent to the Ponnani Fishing Harbour. The initial phase is projected to cost around ₹200 crore. This phase will focus on constructing a wharf and facilities for building smaller vessels. Subsequently, a second phase, spanning the next seven to ten years, will see an estimated investment of ₹1,000 crore dedicated to building larger vessels. The agreement with the private partner is expected within two weeks.
Economic and Employment Outlook
This development is strategically aimed at transforming Ponnani into the largest shipbuilding yard in Kerala, second only to Kochi. Beyond shipbuilding, the project includes plans for a dedicated shipbuilding-related training institute and the commencement of cargo-handling operations once the yard is operational. Officials anticipate that the shipyard will generate employment for approximately 1,000 individuals. Concurrently, alternative facilities are being arranged on the eastern side of the harbour for existing fish-drying units to ensure smooth project execution.
