KRN Heat Exchanger Shares See Institutional Shift in Q2

Mutual funds increased their stake in KRN Heat Exchanger by 1.31 lakh shares during the September quarter. While institutional interest grew with new entries like Union Mutual Fund, prominent investors including VQ FasterCap and Mukul Agrawal reduced their holdings. This shift in ownership, combined with recent capital raising and order wins, highlights changing investor composition in the industrial manufacturer.

KRN Heat Exchanger witnessed a notable transformation in its shareholding structure during the September quarter as institutional buyers increased their positions despite active selling from major non-institutional investors. Mutual funds were net buyers, adding approximately 1.31 lakh shares to their portfolios. The most significant entry came from Union Mutual Fund, which deployed five of its schemes to purchase roughly 1.71 lakh shares. This development expanded the number of fund houses with exposure to the company to 10, up from nine in the previous quarter.

While institutional interest is diversifying, concentration remains a point of focus. WhiteOak Capital continues to hold the largest institutional stake with 13.89 lakh shares distributed across 11 schemes. Although it remains the dominant player, its share of total mutual fund holdings in the company decreased to 63 percent from 67 percent in the June quarter. Other funds, including the Samco Small Cap Fund and the Motilal Oswal Microcap 250 Index Fund, also increased their allocations during the period.

The net buying by mutual funds was absorbed against a backdrop of significant selling by high-profile investors. VQ FasterCap reduced its stake by approximately 28 percent, offloading 4.39 lakh shares. Similarly, investor Mukul Agrawal trimmed his position by 1 lakh shares, representing a 10 percent reduction of his holding, though he retains a 1.37 percent interest in the company.

The combined liquidation by these major investors totaled 5.39 lakh shares, which is higher than the net buying from mutual funds. The fact that the stock absorbed this selling pressure suggests strong interest from other market participants, potentially including retail investors or smaller institutional entities that do not trigger mandatory disclosure requirements. This trading activity follows a period of corporate developments, including a successful Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) that raised ₹350 crore for the company and a series of new order wins in the industrial equipment sector.

For investors, the recent price appreciation of 15 percent, coupled with the shift in ownership, makes the company's operational performance a critical monitorable. As the company moves to deploy the capital raised through the QIP, the key focus for the market will be the execution of these new orders and the impact on profit margins. Any delay in project commissioning or increase in raw material costs could affect future earnings, given the competitive nature of the heat exchanger manufacturing sector. Investors may want to track upcoming quarterly results to see if the increased institutional participation translates into sustainable business growth.
