KKR-Backed Cisternina Acquires Ganesh Benzoplast Storage Assets

Global private equity major KKR has acquired a majority stake in the newly formed Cisternina Logistics, which has taken over the storage terminal and rail business from Ganesh Benzoplast Limited. The deal allows Ganesh Benzoplast to exit its infrastructure business to focus on its core speciality chemical operations. Investors may watch how the company uses these funds to manage debt and pursue future growth, while KKR aims to consolidate the fragmented storage sector.

Global private equity firm KKR has made a strategic entry into India’s liquid and gas storage market by acquiring a majority stake in Cisternina Logistics Private Limited. As part of this platform-building strategy, Cisternina Logistics has taken over the liquid storage terminal and rail business from the BSE-listed firm, Ganesh Benzoplast Limited. This transition involves assets with a total capacity of approximately 500,000 kilolitres (KL), strategically located at major hubs including Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Cochin, and Goa.

Ganesh Benzoplast Focus Shifts Post-Asset Sale

For Ganesh Benzoplast Limited, this deal marks a significant shift in business strategy. By selling its infrastructure assets, the company moves away from capital-intensive storage operations to focus more on its core speciality chemical business. Investors should monitor whether this move helps the company lower its debt burden or improve its balance sheet flexibility. Moving out of the storage business could also reduce the company's reliance on infrastructure maintenance and regulatory compliance, potentially allowing management to dedicate more resources to higher-margin chemical products. The ultimate benefit to shareholders will depend on how efficiently the company allocates the cash received from this sale and whether it can improve profitability in its remaining segments.

Building a Nationwide Liquid Storage Platform

KKR’s entry through Cisternina Logistics highlights the untapped potential in India’s industrial storage sector. The sector is currently highly fragmented, with many small players operating without the economies of scale needed to standardize safety, governance, and operational efficiency. By bringing these assets under a single, professionalized platform, KKR aims to improve utilization and attract larger industrial clients who require reliable supply chain partners. Since approximately 95% of India’s external trade by volume passes through coastal infrastructure, secure and modern storage facilities are critical for industries like chemicals, energy, and edible oils.

However, the venture faces execution risks. Integrating multiple terminals across different geographic locations requires strong operational capability and navigating complex port regulations in India. KKR’s success in this space will depend on its ability to execute both brownfield expansions—improving existing facilities—and potential greenfield projects. Investors should track future updates on operational integration, regulatory approvals at major ports, and whether the platform can successfully scale its capacity to meet growing industrial demand.
