Jindal Stainless Targets 2.67 MTPA Capacity; Updates Growth Strategy

Jindal Stainless is advancing a ₹900 crore expansion to reach 2.67 MTPA cold-rolling capacity by FY28. This follows the commissioning of a 1.2 MTPA melt shop in Indonesia earlier this year. While the company continues to serve established segments like coin blanks at its 10,000-tonne capacity, its primary focus remains on scaling its broader stainless steel manufacturing footprint amidst competitive import pressures.

Jindal Stainless (JSL) continues to execute its multi-year expansion roadmap aimed at strengthening its market position in the stainless steel sector. The company's recent operational milestones include the commissioning of a 1.2 MTPA stainless steel melt shop in Indonesia in March 2026, which has pushed its total consolidated melting capacity to 4.2 MTPA. This facility is a key part of the company's strategy to bolster its supply chain and meet global demand for high-grade steel products.

Building on this momentum, the company has committed to a ₹900 crore investment to increase its annual cold-rolling capacity to 2.67 MTPA by the 2028 financial year, up from the current 2.05 MTPA. This capital spending is designed to enhance the company's ability to cater to diverse industrial needs, including high-value applications such as razor blade strips and established product lines like coin blanks. The company maintains an annual production capacity of 10,000 tonnes for coin blanks, continuing its role as a key supplier for various national mints and international clients.

Financially, Jindal Stainless reported a steady start to the 2027 fiscal year. In the first quarter, the company recorded revenue of ₹11,279 crore, marking a 10.5% growth compared to the previous year, while net profit stood at ₹769 crore, an increase of 7.6%. The company's balance sheet remains relatively healthy, with a net debt-to-equity ratio of 0.14x, reflecting a focus on prudent capital management even as it scales operations.

Despite the growth, the company faces notable sector-wide challenges. The domestic stainless steel market is currently navigating pressure from lower-priced, often substandard imports that are frequently rerouted through ASEAN countries. This creates competitive headwinds for domestic producers who must contend with margin compression risks. Furthermore, global geopolitical instability, such as the ongoing crisis in West Asia, poses potential risks to international logistics and the steady availability of essential industrial inputs.

As of August 28, 2026, the company’s share price closed at ₹705.15. Moving forward, investors will be monitoring the company's progress on its cold-rolling capacity expansion and its ability to maintain profit margins despite rising fuel costs and fierce import competition. Management’s efforts to improve energy efficiency at its plants, including the integration of renewable power sources, remain a key operational area that may impact long-term sustainability and cost structures.
