Investment and Expansion Plans

POSCO Group is investing around ₹508.8 crore for its stake in the 50:50 joint venture, Saffron Resources Private Limited. The project is expected to be completed by December 31, 2026, unless both parties agree to extend the timeline. For JSW Steel, aiming to reach 50 MTPA crude steel production by fiscal year 2031, this project is a key part of its expansion. POSCO, which has about 45 MTPA manufacturing capacity, will also grow its presence in the Indian market.

Project Site and Capacity

The new plant will be built on 887 acres of land Saffron Resources owns in Odisha, which includes 595 acres of freehold and 292 acres of leasehold property. This site is intended for the 6 MTPA production capacity. JSW Steel and POSCO will share equal board representation, guiding the joint venture's strategy together.

Diplomatic Context

This steel plant joint venture was announced during the South Korean President's state visit to India. The visit aims to boost Seoul's "Global South" diplomacy and revitalize the "Special Strategic Partnership" formed in 2015. The collaboration highlights wider economic ties in areas like advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, defense, and green energy. Leaders are expected to sign several agreements during the summit, strengthening trade and investment between the two nations, especially in India's growing industrial sector.
