JSW Energy Seals 1,600 MW Thermal Project PPA in West Bengal
Overview

JSW Energy's subsidiary inked a crucial power purchase agreement for a 1,600 MW thermal project in Salboni, West Bengal. This marks the company's second such deal with WBSEDCL, significantly expanding its Salboni capacity to 3,200 MW. The project leverages domestic coal and strategic synergies, reinforcing JSW Energy's commitment to providing reliable, affordable power and bolstering India's energy security objectives.

Strategic Expansion and Synergies

JSW Energy's commitment to India's energy security received a substantial boost with the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 1,600 MW thermal power project. This greenfield venture, situated in Salboni, West Bengal, will feature two 800 MW units, with commissioning targeted within six years. The project was secured via a competitive bidding process by WBSEDCL and will utilize domestic coal allocated under the SHAKTI B (iv) policy.

Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “This makes Salboni our largest single-location asset and reinforces our commitment to India’s energy security through the supply of reliable and affordable power.” The strategic advantages are clear: proximity to coal blocks and existing synergies with the 1,600 MW unit currently under construction at the same site promise significant operational efficiencies.

Broader Capacity Outlook and Future Goals

This latest agreement is the second PPA JSW Energy has secured with WBSEDCL for the Salboni site, following a similar 1,600 MW deal inked in March 2025. Consequently, the total capacity at Salboni will grow to 3,200 MW. JSW Energy currently operates 5,658 MW of thermal generation capacity. With 3,200 MW under construction at Salboni and an option to add another 1,800 MW at KSK Mahanadi, the company's total thermal capacity is projected to reach 10,658 MW, all powered by domestic coal.

The company boasts a total locked-in generation capacity of 32.1 GW, including 13.3 GW operational and 14 GW under construction. JSW Energy also maintains a significant energy storage pipeline, with 29.4 GWh capacity from hydro pumped storage and battery systems. These developments align with JSW Energy's ambitious targets of achieving 30 GW generation capacity and 40 GWh energy storage by 2030, and carbon neutrality by 2050.
