US Tariffs Squeeze Leather Exports
Leather sector representatives met the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce in Chennai on Wednesday, voicing sharp concerns over escalating U.S. tariffs impacting India's export performance. Officials confirmed the delegation highlighted that tariffs imposed by the United States, reportedly around 50%, are significantly diminishing the competitiveness of Indian leather products in the U.S. market. This has led to a noticeable decline in export volumes.
Jobs and Livelihoods at Risk
The industry delegation, including former CLE chairman PR Aqeel Ahmed and executive director R Selvam, emphasized the leather sector's critical role in supporting a vast workforce. They specifically pointed out the significant employment provided to women and marginalized communities, warning that persistent trade disruptions could trigger severe socio-economic consequences across these vulnerable segments.
Call for Diplomatic and Policy Action
Exporters urged the committee to actively engage with the U.S. government to address both tariff and non-tariff barriers through bilateral discussions. The delegation also requested support measures for exporters and facilitation of market diversification strategies. Diversifying export destinations is seen as crucial to mitigate risks associated with trade uncertainties and dependency on single markets.
