Russia has proposed fresh initiatives in shipbuilding and expanded maritime cooperation with India, aiming to strengthen ties across the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. The proposals were discussed during consultations in New Delhi between Nikolai Patrushev, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and India's Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The talks focused on the civilian maritime sector, including shipbuilding, port infrastructure, maritime logistics, crew training, and future deep-sea research.
Nikolai Patrushev highlighted Russia's readiness to supply India with vessel designs or collaborate on developing new ones for fishing, passenger, and auxiliary vessels. He emphasized Russia's extensive experience in constructing specialized ships, such as ice-class vessels and icebreakers, an area where Russia claims to have no rivals. Patrushev also held meetings with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and National Maritime Security Coordinator Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta.
