Scaling Production for Defense Contracts
The company is currently working to fulfill a significant contract worth Rs 5,200 crore, which involves the supply of 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles to the Indian Armed Forces. To meet this demand, IRRPL is enhancing its manufacturing infrastructure with the goal of producing one rifle every 100 seconds.
Due to these operational improvements, the company has advanced its target for completing the total contract to December 2030, moving the deadline forward by nearly two years from the original October 2032 schedule. This acceleration is intended to meet the urgent requirements of the Indian defense forces while optimizing the facility's overall throughput.
Understanding the Manufacturing Shift
IRRPL operates as a joint venture, with 50.5% ownership held by Indian entities—Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL)—and 49.5% by Russian partners, Kalashnikov Concern and Rosoboronexport. The successful test-firing of the fully indigenous version is essential as it prepares the product for comprehensive trials by the Indian Armed Forces, which are scheduled to commence in September 2026.
