Overhaul Prioritizes Sustainable Water Delivery
The Union Cabinet's decision represents a major strategic shift for the Jal Jeevan Mission. With an ₹8.69 lakh crore budget, the program will now emphasize long-term service delivery and the sustainability of village piped water systems, moving beyond just infrastructure creation. This aims to improve drinking water governance and local management.
Funding Boosted to Over ₹3.5 Lakh Crore
Central government assistance for the mission has risen to ₹3.59 lakh crore, a significant increase from the ₹2.08 lakh crore approved in 2019-20. This substantial financial backing signals a strong commitment to improving rural water access.
Digital Mapping and Local Management Enhanced
A national digital framework, Sujalam Bharat, is set to be introduced. It will assign unique IDs to villages for digitally mapping water supply networks, boosting monitoring and transparency. Community involvement will also be enhanced through 'Jal Arpan,' a program where village councils and water committees will formally manage water supply projects.
Progress Made, Universal Coverage Targeted by 2028
Since its 2019 launch, the mission has connected over 15.80 crore rural households to tap water, achieving 81.61% coverage. The current phase aims for universal tap water access for all 19.36 crore rural households by December 2028, with a focus on establishing robust operation and maintenance systems.
