GSFC Profit Falls 38% on Rising Costs Despite Revenue Jump

Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals reported a 38% decline in Q2 profit to ₹200.24 crore as higher input costs squeezed margins, despite a 49% revenue surge. The company also announced plans to reduce its stake in its non-operational logistics subsidiary.

Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals (GSFC) reported a sharp divergence between its top-line and bottom-line performance for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. While the company achieved a strong 49% growth in revenue from operations, totaling ₹4,740.94 crore, its consolidated net profit dropped 38.2% year-on-year to ₹200.24 crore. This performance highlights the challenge the company faced in protecting profitability despite higher sales volumes.

The decline in profit was largely driven by pressure on operating margins. The company’s EBITDA margin, which measures profit from core operations before interest, tax, and depreciation, compressed to 2.95% compared to 10.56% in the same quarter last year. This contraction in margins was primarily triggered by rising costs for key raw materials, including sulphur and natural gas, which are essential for fertilizer production.

Logistics Subsidiary Divestment

Alongside the financial results, the board approved a reduction in the company's stake in the Gujarat Port and Logistics Company (GPLCL). GSFC currently holds a 60% stake in the logistics firm but plans to cut this to 11%. This change is part of a broader infrastructure reorganization directed by the Gujarat state government.

The management clarified that this move will have a minimal impact on day-to-day operations. GPLCL is currently a non-operational entity and recorded no turnover for the 2026 fiscal year. The process involves transferring shares and renouncing rights issues to state-backed entities, including the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation and the Gujarat Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation, to comply with the government mandate.

Investor Monitorables

Investors are now looking for signs of margin recovery. Because GSFC operates in the fertilizer and industrial chemicals sector, its financial health remains closely tied to the prices of imported raw materials. Volatility in international commodity prices can quickly impact the company's cost structure. Additionally, the business remains sensitive to regulatory changes in the fertilizer subsidy regime and domestic demand patterns, which are often influenced by the quality and timing of the monsoon season.

The key monitorable for the coming quarters will be whether the company can pass on higher input costs to customers or if raw material prices soften, helping to stabilize profit margins. The progress of the planned logistics unit divestment will also be tracked to ensure the process remains in line with regulatory timelines.
