Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Buy' rating on Cummins India, setting a target price of Rs 6,400. While demand from data centers and industrial segments remains strong, the company is dealing with near-term profit margin pressures. Investors should also note an upcoming management transition following the Managing Director's resignation.
Motilal Oswal has reiterated its 'Buy' recommendation for Cummins India Ltd., establishing a new target price of Rs 6,400. Based on the current stock price of approximately Rs 5,190, this target suggests a potential upside of about 23%. The brokerage analysis highlights that the company is well-positioned to benefit from a significant shift in infrastructure spending, particularly in the power generation needs of data centers.
Growth Drivers and Demand
The positive outlook is largely tied to the increasing reliance on reliable power solutions for data centers. Cummins India is supplying specialized engines, including locally manufactured QSK60 units and imported QSK78 and QSK95 models, to meet the high power requirements of hyperscale data centers. Beyond technology infrastructure, the company continues to see consistent demand across other key industrial segments such as railways, defense, mining, and marine applications. Exports, specifically to European and Asia Pacific markets, are also expected to provide a buffer against slower demand in other regions.
Financial Context and Margin Pressures
While the growth outlook is optimistic, the company’s recent financial results reflect some of the challenges currently facing the business. In the quarter ended June 2026, Cummins India reported revenue of Rs 3,426 crore, which was an 18% increase compared to the previous year. However, the company's standalone net profit declined by 7.9% to Rs 543 crore during the same period.
A key factor impacting the bottom line is margin pressure. Gross profit margins contracted by approximately 350 basis points year-on-year in the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. This decline is largely attributed to the rising cost of raw materials. Consequently, the brokerage has moderately adjusted its earnings estimates for fiscal years 2027 through 2029 to account for these ongoing input cost challenges.
Management Transition
Investors are also tracking a significant change within the company’s leadership. Shveta Arya, the current Managing Director, has resigned from her position, with her tenure ending on August 31, 2026. Management changes in large organizations can lead to uncertainty regarding future strategy or operational continuity. Market participants will likely watch for updates on the succession plan and whether the new leadership maintains the current business trajectory.
Moving forward, the primary monitorables for shareholders include the company's ability to pass on rising raw material costs to customers to improve profit margins, the speed of executing large data center orders, and updates regarding the leadership transition. Any volatility in global commodity prices or changes in government spending on infrastructure could also influence the company's performance in the coming quarters.
