State-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) announced Thursday it secured a significant order from Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL). The contract is for coal gasification and raw syngas cleaning facilities for a coal-to-ammonium nitrate project located in Jharsuguda, Odisha.
BCGCL is a joint venture company formed by BHEL and Coal India Ltd. This partnership highlights a strategic move towards integrated chemical production.
The scope of work for BHEL encompasses engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and performance guarantee of the core process units. This includes the gasifier and its associated auxiliaries, a steam generation plant, an air separation unit, coal and ash handling systems, and cooling tower facilities.
Technology Focus
A key aspect of this order is the deployment of BHEL's in-house developed Pressurised Fluidised Bed Gasification (PFBG) technology. This project marks the first commercial-scale application of this proprietary technology, signaling BHEL's capability in advancing industrial processes.
Project Significance
The coal-to-ammonium nitrate project aims to leverage indigenous resources for chemical production. BHEL's involvement ensures the core technological backbone of this complex is robust and domestically engineered. This order is expected to bolster BHEL's order book and demonstrate its expanded capabilities in the chemical and energy transition sectors.
