Ambuja Cements to Invest ₹14,500 Crore to Reach 155 MTPA

Ambuja Cements has announced a ₹14,500 crore investment to grow its production capacity to 155 million metric tonnes per annum by fiscal year 2030. This move comes as the company balances long-term growth with a recent 90% drop in quarterly profit caused by high energy and logistics costs.

Ambuja Cements has unveiled a major capital investment plan worth ₹14,500 crore to significantly scale up its cement production. The company aims to increase its total capacity to 155 million metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) by the 2030 financial year. This strategic drive involves 14 separate projects, including both new plants and expansions of existing facilities across key regions such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and eastern states including Assam, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Balancing Growth and Profitability

This aggressive expansion strategy arrives during a challenging period for the company. In its second-quarter results for fiscal 2027, Ambuja Cements reported a sharp 90% year-on-year decline in net profit, which fell to ₹236 crore. Revenue for the quarter stood at ₹9,197 crore. The steep drop in profitability illustrates the heavy pressure cement manufacturers are facing from rising fuel and logistics expenses. By expanding its scale, management intends to improve logistics efficiency and lower the cost per tonne to ₹4,000 by fiscal 2028.

Financial Position and Market Strategy

Despite the recent dip in profit, Ambuja Cements maintains a debt-free balance sheet. This strong financial foundation allows the company to pursue such a large investment without the burden of interest payments, which is a significant advantage in a capital-intensive industry. The strategy focuses on increasing the share of premium products and trade sales, which typically offer better profit margins compared to standard commodity cement. By reinforcing its presence in major consumption markets, the company aims to better capture demand from housing and infrastructure projects.

Sector Challenges and Risks

The Indian cement sector is currently dealing with high input costs, including elevated prices for petcoke and diesel. These rising operational expenses have squeezed profit margins across the industry. For investors, the success of this expansion will depend on the company's ability to manage these costs effectively while executing 14 complex projects without significant delays.

While the company remains debt-free, large-scale expansions carry the inherent risk of cost overruns or slower-than-expected demand in specific regional markets. The ability to maintain operational efficiency while rapidly adding capacity will be the primary monitorable for the company in the coming quarters. Investors should track project timelines and the company’s ability to recover profit margins as it integrates these new production units into its network.
