Adani Enterprises is set to raise capacity utilization at its Kutch Copper unit to 85% by March 2027 after securing 80% of its raw material supplies. The smelter, which recently achieved London Metal Exchange registration, has shifted from operating losses to a key contributor to company profits, though future margins may adjust as raw material prices normalize.
Adani Enterprises is accelerating production at its Kutch Copper smelter, with plans to reach 80% to 85% capacity utilization by March 2027. This upward revision from previous targets follows the company’s success in locking in a stable supply of copper concentrate, which is essential for consistent operations. With approximately 80% of its feedstock now secured through a mix of long-term and short-term agreements, the unit is better protected against the volatility often seen in global commodity markets.
Operational Turnaround and Market Recognition
The Kutch Copper facility has marked a significant operational turnaround in the first half of the 2027 fiscal year. After navigating early technical challenges, the smelter transitioned from an operating loss in the previous year to becoming a meaningful contributor to Adani Enterprises' total earnings. In the first half of FY27, the company reported a record EBITDA of ₹11,958 crore, with the copper segment playing a vital role in this growth. The facility has also secured brand registration from the London Metal Exchange for its ‘Adani Copper’ Grade-A cathodes, which helps in establishing the product's quality and acceptance in global markets.
Margin Outlook and Future Expansion
While the ramp-up in volume is a positive step, management has pointed to the need for a realistic view on future profitability. Recent profit margins were boosted by higher prices for sulphuric acid, a byproduct of the copper smelting process. As these prices are expected to stabilize or moderate, the long-term sustainable profit margins for the unit are likely to normalize toward a range of 5%. Investors should track how the company manages costs as these market conditions change.
Looking ahead, the facility is preparing for further expansion, with plans to increase capacity from the current 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 1 MTPA. The company is also integrating renewable energy, with a 115 MW project aimed at improving the sustainability profile of the plant. The success of these expansion plans will depend on the company’s ability to maintain a steady flow of copper concentrate and successfully scale operations without the technical issues that affected the smelter earlier in the year. The primary monitorables for shareholders moving forward will be the actual production numbers achieved by March and any updates on the cost-efficiency of the upcoming 1 MTPA capacity expansion.
